New Study Explores the Unity of Ontology and History in the Theology of Joseph Ratzinger

Ontological and Historical Dimensions of Salvation According to Joseph Ratzinger: To Identity through History, by Isabel C. Troconis, a member of the Academic Network of the International Ratzinger Foundation, has been published by T&T Clark / Bloomsbury Publishing in August 2025, offering a fresh and rigorous engagement with one of the most enduring questions in contemporary Catholic theology.

In this monograph, Dr. Troconis examines the critical tension between ontology and history, showing how this separation has shaped and challenged modern dogmatic theology. Drawing deeply on the writings of Joseph Ratzinger, one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Troconis argues that Ratzinger offers a powerful framework for restoring the original unity of these two dimensions within a coherent understanding of salvation.

Through a careful analysis of Ratzinger’s corpus, the book highlights his relational and existential approach to salvation, demonstrating how a properly integrated vision of being and history can contribute to overcoming long-standing theological dichotomies. The work explores key themes, including the human person’s identity as imago Dei, the historical character of created beings, and the role of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of human identity.

Scholars have commended Troconis for her clarity, depth, and scholarly reach. They also note that this volume serves both as a guide to Ratzinger’s complex theology and as a significant contribution to contemporary theological discourse, showing how his thought bridges classical metaphysical insights with the narrative dynamism of salvation history.

Published in hardback and digital formats, the book spans 176 pages and is the fifth volume of the T&T Clark Studies in Ressourcement Catholic Theology and Culture series, edited by Matthew Levering and Tracey Rowland.

Isabel C. Troconis is Adjunct Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome).
